Interview with an alum

A conversation with one of our volunteer alumnae/i interviewers is an excellent way for you to learn more about Vassar and for us to learn more about you. These evaluative alumnae/i interviews are available for first-year applicants and take place from November through February. All interviews, whether in-person, at interviewing days, by phone, or by Skype/G-Chat are considered equally by the Office of Admission. After the conversation, the alumnae/i interviewer will send the Office of Admission their evaluation of your academic and personal strengths, which we will add to your application file. We recognize not all students are able to meet with an alumnae/i interviewer, so if it is not possible to arrange an interview, rest assured that it will not negatively impact your application to Vassar.

Important Notes:

  • Requests to meet with an alum will be processed only after we have received a student’s application and application fee or fee waiver.
  • Please be aware of our alumnae/i interview request deadlines. We cannot guarantee that requests made after the deadline for your application round will be accommodated.
  • For applicants required to submit the TOEFL/IELTS, Vassar recommends you also submit an interview as an additional way to demonstrate English language proficiency. You may request to meet with a Vassar alumnae/i volunteer (submit request) and/or participate in a third party interview service. Vassar accepts interviews from InitialView and Vericant. Please note that these vendors, unlike our alumnae/i volunteers, are not Vassar specific. InitialView and Vericant interviewers will not be able to answer questions about Vassar. You must complete your third party interview by March 1st to have it reviewed for Regular Decision.
We understand there is a cost for these vendors; therefore interviews are recommended, but not required. In cases where the interviewing fee would be prohibitive, you or your high school counselor can contact the vendors directly to obtain a fee waiver.

Interview Tips:

  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes early for the interview. If you are going to be late, be sure to let your interviewer know.
  • The interview is meant to be a conversation and not a stressful experience. This conversation should help us learn more about you and allow you to learn more about Vassar.
  • It is not necessary to bring a resume, high school transcript, or other application materials to the interview.
  • Be prepared to talk about your high school experience, interests, goals, and why you’re interested in Vassar.
  • Here are some questions your interviewer might ask:
    • Can you tell me a little about yourself?
    • What are your current academic and/or extracurricular interests?
    • What plans do you have for your future?
    • What classes, programs, and activities on Vassar’s campus are exciting to you?
  • When responding to a question, elaborate, use examples, and tell stories when possible.
  • Do some research on Vassar and prepare a couple of informed questions to ask the interviewer; these could be questions about the interviewer’s experience at Vassar or programs you’re interested in.
  • It’s ok to let your personal style show through, but make sure to wear appropriate clothing to the interview. You do not need to buy a suit or a new outfit for the interview, but wear something a little more formal than your usual attire.
  • Remember to shake the interviewer’s hand when you meet, make eye contact during the conversation, and thank them for their time afterward.
  • After the interview, a quick thank-you note is always appreciated. Beyond expressing your gratitude, no further contact with the interviewer is necessary or expected.
  • Your alumnae/i interviewer will submit a summary of your discussion to the Admission Committee, to be added to your application.
