Lehman Loeb Art Center

Matthew Vassar, founder, believed that art should stand "boldly forth as an educational force." As his founding gift to the college, he purchased the entire collection of the Reverend Elias Magoon—"over 400 pictures in oil and watercolor of best known contemporary artists"—making Vassar the first college in the country to include an art museum and a teaching collection among its facilities. Today, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center houses a collection of more than 15,000 works, spanning the history of art from ancient Egypt to contemporary America.
